‘Encoded’: A solo exhibition at Art Center Sarasota

Our words define us as profoundly as our ideas and our actions. Yet despite their weight, we perceive them as ethereal, fleeting—even disposable.

Would this still be so if they occupied physical space? If we could suddenly touch the intangible, would we discover comfort, connection, or even grace? Might we reconsider how we use language as an art, a tool, a weapon, or a balm?
— Christina Jensen Vicente

In my first immersive installation of handmade textile and mixed media works, Encoded transforms texts from diverse sources and eras into physical symbols, translating them first into code, then into color, and finally into form.

The series reflects on the symbolic meaning and weight of words, making them visible and undeniable and, like talismans, infusing our surroundings with human, cultural, and natural wisdoms that risk being lost in the disorder of our times.

Seen individually, these works give form to voices of reason, compassion, wisdom, and courage. Taken together, they come into communication with each other and with the viewer, imbuing our very surroundings with collective meaning and a shared ethos. They embody an invitation to reflect on the arc of history and consider what we—each and together—can bring to its unfolding.
